Our shop carries six series of Juniper EX switches, from the compact access switch for branch offices to the distribution switch with 25GbE and 100GbE ports. This guide classifies the series by deployment, port configuration, PoE and Virtual Chassis and shows which series Juniper has discontinued. All information is taken from Juniper datasheets and specification pages and from the Juniper overview of EX Series end-of-life dates (page dated 30 July 2026).

Depending on the model, PoE budgets apply with two power supplies. The EX4000-8P differs with 2 × 1GbE RJ45 and 2 × 1/10GbE SFP+ uplinks and a PoE budget of 120 W. Juniper does not state a PoE budget for the compact EX4100-F models.

Branch and campus access: EX4000, EX4100 and EX3400

Juniper describes the EX4000 as an economical solution for the access layer in branch and remote offices. The 8-port and 12-port models are fanless and have a compact width of 26.4 cm. The multigigabit models provide PoE++ with up to 60 W per port, and up to six switches can be managed as a Virtual Chassis.

The EX4100 is designed for campus, branch and data center. It offers EVPN-VXLAN at the access layer, MACsec with AES256 and, on the multigigabit models, PoE++ with up to 90 W per port. The SFP28 ports serve as Virtual Chassis connections or uplinks, and up to ten switches are managed as one device. The EX4100-F version with 12, 24 or 48 ports has an integrated power supply.

The EX3400 additionally offers two 40GbE uplinks, redundant field-replaceable power supplies up to 920 W and models with different airflow directions. Juniper has not published an end-of-life notice for the hardware, but the former product page on juniper.net is no longer available. We therefore check availability for each enquiry.

High PoE power and multigigabit: EX4400

The EX4400 has the highest PoE budget of the six series: up to 3600 W on the EX4400-48XP and EX4400-48MXP, with IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ and up to 90 W per port. The multigigabit models offer 2.5GbE and 10GbE ports. Two 100GbE ports serve as Virtual Chassis connections or uplinks, and a module slot takes either 4 × 10GbE SFP+, 4 × 25GbE SFP28 or 1 × 100GbE QSFP28. Redundant hot-swappable power supplies and group-based policy microsegmentation are also included.

Distribution and data center: EX4650

According to Juniper, the EX4650 is designed for the campus distribution layer and is suitable as a top-of-rack switch in the data center. The EX4650-48Y offers 48 ports for 1/10/25GbE and 8 ports for 40/100GbE in one rack unit, with a switching capacity of 4 Tbps. With breakout cables, up to 80 ports at 25GbE are possible. The series has no PoE and two redundant 650 W power supplies.

EX2300: discontinued by Juniper

Juniper has discontinued the EX2300 series including all model variants (TSB107683). The last order date was 30 September 2026, and support ends on 30 September 2031. Existing installations remain supported until then. The public Juniper overview does not name a successor. For branch and campus access, Juniper currently describes the EX4000 and EX4100 series, among others. We are happy to check with you which series fits your installed base.

Selection criteria

  • Deployment: access layer in branch or campus, distribution layer or data center.
  • Access ports: number of end devices and required speed, 1GbE or multigigabit for fast access points.
  • PoE: total power of all end devices such as access points, phones and cameras compared with the switch PoE budget.
  • Uplinks and Virtual Chassis: speed towards the distribution layer and number of switches to be managed as one device.
  • Management: according to Juniper, all six series can be managed from the cloud with Juniper Mist Wired Assurance.
